I'm not terribly stuff-oriented. I don't much care about things like clothes or shoes, jewelry or gadgets. My cell phone is nearly 3 years old, I watch a 19-inch TV (not a flatscreen), I wear the same necklace every day (though I do have 2 others), and I only have about 5 different pairs of earrings (all from Target, which is also where I buy most of my clothes... they have cute stuff!). I drive my cars 'til they simply won't go anymore, and other than my computer and maybe my camera, I can't think of one thing in my house worth stealing (a thief would do
much better to break into my next-door neighbor's).
I do spend more money than I should on books and magazines. And I love to browse catalogs for house stuff and clothes... I just tend not to buy from them (though maybe I would if I had loads of money... I dunno). They are my material indulgences. If I ever have any extra money, I prefer to spend it on
going and
doing rather than
getting.
But I found something I'd totally splurge on if I had the cash (a lot of cash)...
Doesn't that look heavenly? I could meditate my butt off if I had that pool.
So, what about you? What thing would you splurge on if you had a load of extra cash to blow?

I would build a clinic for my friend Amrita in India. She helps to run the church there, but her dream is to have a clinic to help people. And I'd build a pool that looks just like that - for them to cool off in! ;)
I would totally build a pool like that, except with a HUGE air conditioning unit and some kind of walls that trap out the Houston humidity. It's KILLLING us!
Hi Diane, i totally agree with your philosophy on spending - i am the same. I just don't get the 'gotta have it' bug with 'things' but if I had the money, I would love to splurge on a camper van to travel and feel free - hitting the open road is my dream. Sadly the only road I'm likley to hit is the one conjested with mums on the hideous school run. Have a great weekend
Yes please Diane, I want that to! Actually though, that's a tough one. Emmm, maybe a new oven? I have to keep using the microwave! A new fridge? Mines a wee bit leaky! Oh no, I'm becoming so practical in my advanced age!!
A studio...well a house first :) then a studio, built to my specific wishes...oh yummo! And a maid!
Well I really like the look of that pool so after doing something philanthropic with my cash and helping out my children...it would have to be oodles of cash...yes a pool would be very nice with its own room, I need a new oven, mine is very old and a new fridge.
I havent had a holiday in 14years so that would be nice as well. ♡
I think I would purchase a log cabin in the mountains. Small and cozy, with a fireplace in the bedroom and a hot tub on the deck in the back.
NO TV-just music. No computer either.
The pool is heavenly- and the view!
This is a fun game. I am with you on spending money on the going and the doing rather than the getting...
I have always wanted a pool. I guess I would choose that, or a little cabin on a lake in the middle of no-where...
Oh, again, Diane, we so have a covalent brain! Love the pool. I think I'd spend a sudden winfall on a trip around the world...backpack style!
Great. Now I feel guilty for posting about our stuff I've been replacing lately (and blogging about)! Geez Diane! In my defense, the things I've replaced are either broken or begging to be replaced due to holes!! AND they'll be with us for YEARS.
Stuff drives me nuts too but I'm with you on that pool! I always look in our backyard (that isn't ours because we rent it) and wish we had a pool *sigh* ... One day :)
Hi Diane, in your 'warm fuzzies' post did you take all of those photos yourself?
May I please ask the location of that beautiful beach photo, it looks so lovely? ♡
I would have a Pilates room filled with equipment...it's expensive to take the classes and I moan and bitch while there but the work-out has done more for my emotional well being than sex, church or shopping! :)
Diane please do not meditate your butt OFF!!! That is just wrong!!!
Me? I would want a running track. So i would have to have a house big enough for a running track all around it right??
So that is what i would want!! Oh and a pool too!! To meditate my butt off!!!
Wow, that pool looks so amazing!;)
Extra cash; I think I would pay off some (all?) of my mortgage so I had more cash each month to splurge on exactly those things you talk about; jewelry, clothes an cosmetics. Hehe.;))
I hope your weekend is lovely:;))
You have kept a cell phone alive for THREE YEARS?!?! You ARE my idol.
I would probably splurge on a pool, too. But not to meditate by, but to swim IN. Or a nice hot tub. Ooh, that sounds heavenly right now.
Oh man. I'm so good at spending imaginary money.
The first thing that comes to mind is getting the bathroom redone with a huge roundy spa-style bathtub, with water-jets & everything.
That swimming pool looks good but I always liked infinity pools, you know those ones where the water just runs over the edge, and they're usually outdoors with some kick-ass view.
With a load of extra cash to blow, I would definitely have a pool, a steam room, a sauna and a jacuzzi/hot-tub built in my long garden...
I'd also really like to build up into my loft and have a bedroom and ensuite for me next to the rafters - As the views from up there over the hills are so lovely, and we only have two bedrooms in the cottage...
If money were no object, I would be just like Brigitte Bardot, and I'd have an animal sanctuary on some land somewhere - That would really be what I'd like to do...
Great posting, Diane x
Like you I spend way too much on BOOKS -- I can hardly keep up with all the ones I buy! ;-)
I don't do expensive jewelry, either, and I love shopping for clothes at Target!
I DO spend money on my hair -- must work on that!
If I had money (lots of money), I'd stay home and WRITE -- so while that's not a thing, it's my DREAM, to really be a writer (to create time and space to do so!).
So, I'd probably also spend some of my lottery winnings on studying the art of writing, which would undoubtedly require buying more books! ;-)
That is a lovely pool, Diane. I love it, and I can see the appeal to splurging on that.
As for what I would splurge on... a new ride. My car is too small for the seven of us, and we don't ever go anywhere together because we can't all fit. I would love to get something new and big enough to haul ALL of my crew around. And if we're splurging, it would have a port for my iPod, power everything, and the whole DVD set up. And it would come with a kick-ass warranty. For the next twenty years. On everything. Yup.
I'm not big into stuff, I spend a small fortune on books, and I would totally love that pool only if that glass roof over it opens all the way back so I could be 'outside' while I'm in it.
Now I totally want this too....
Ya know, Diane, I love your interactive blog . . . always the questions.
If I had the money, I think it woudl go to an awesome car (Jag or something) or a killer entertainment syste.
I'm simple.
a small old cottage by the beach on a Greek Island. bliss
I amnon materialistic as well.. but I think you have found the one thing I would ALSO spend any extra money I had
what an interesting question..I can think of things I would do with money..but what would I buy??? a pool..maybe... a boat , prob..not! HMMM?? you know what..I thing I would buy an RV! I would LOVE to travle the country ..so maybe thats what I would do!! I really need to think on this some more tho!! :)
A cruise...I would go on a two week cruise. No kids...
Zen swimming... I like it.
