Truth a la Diane...

I got this cool award (at least I think it’s an award… maybe it’s just a tag and I’m getting all full of myself again) from the lovely Sam.
In order to receive it, I have to tell you 10 (interesting) truths about myself. Hmmmm. Interesting is subjective, I think… actually truth, when you’re talking about yourself, is pretty subjective as well, isn’t it? Anyway, here you have it – Truth a la Diane…

1. I simply cannot hide my feelings, no matter how I try. My heart? Always on my sleeve. You’ll know just by looking at me if I love you, loathe you, want you dead, etc.

2. While I make friends easily (and I can make conversation with a stump), I find it difficult to put myself in situations where I’ll meet new people, especially if I’m doing it alone. For that reason, since I moved here as a single mom who works from home, I’ve spent quite a bit of time lonely. I’ve discovered, though, that loneliness is a good motivator for stepping out of one’s comfort zone.

3. I think about sex more often than a teenaged boy. And I am ever so thankful (on a daily basis) that I don’t have any body parts over which I have no (obvious) control.

4. I am a huge proponent of gay marriage. I don’t think any government has the right to dictate the legality of a partnership between adults, especially one that involves love and commitment, something so sadly lacking in our society. I’m sure my stance on this issue has been affected by the fact that I have two very close gay friends, but I’d like to think I’d feel as strongly even if they weren’t in my life.

5. A few years ago, I had an essay published in a book of essays about diversity compiled by Yolanda King, Martin Luther King’s daughter. It was the proudest moment of my life and there are (many) times when I’m terrified it was the only one like it I’ll ever experience.

6. I have been truly, madly, deeply in love twice in my life. Neither time was with my ex-husband (though I did love him). I'm still looking for the third love of my life.

7. I don’t believe in religion or a divine plan or an all-knowing God and I’m not a Christian, but I do believe in a creative force and that there is something beyond this life. I also believe strongly in tolerance for others' beliefs, as in the end, not a one of us really knows for sure.

8. I used to hate it that I was never the ‘pretty one’ among my friends (I have beautiful friends) but now I (finally) really like my face (my ass, however, is another story entirely!).

9. I love my daughter more than life and I believe that being her mom is the most important job I’ll ever have. I also believe there is a lot more to me than being a mother and I don’t want to be identified solely by that title.

10. My greatest fear is not that I won’t live up to my potential… but that I may have already done so.

OK, I’m supposed to pass this on to 7 people but I’m just going to leave it up to you… do if you’d like (and if you do, tell me, so I can read Truth a la You!).

You are so admirably honest. I'm not sure I could be as brave. #10 hit me particularly hard. A very thought-provoking list.

I love this post about you. And #5!!! WOW!! What a great moment! :)

I'm not sure if I'll be able to get around to this post.. Maybe when I'm committed full time to my blog again :)

I love your honesty here - I will do this, but probably not until Thursday and I'll link back to you and let you know.

I love to learn still new things about you.;) I so identify with the #1.;))

I admire your honesty and I will have to work harder on my self honesty before I take up your challenge.

SSP said...

brilliant as always...and I am with you on #2. Hence, I hide behind the little flickering lights of my Dell...and as for gay rights....here is my LONG thought out essay on that subject (if the link carries). http://ssprants.blogspot.com/2008/12/gay-rights-from-straight-perspective.html

#2 won my heart immediately. My husband and I moved to a small town and have been here 10 years. No kids in school and I work out of my home. Even with Hunks around, it can still be a bit lonely, especially for girl-talk. Finding that best girlfriend within five minutes' distance is difficult at best.

Sam_I_am said...

I don't know if it was a tag or an award either, but I made it an award, cuz I gotta get it where I can :-D

Melanie Gillispie said...

Oh-you know I'll do it since I had nothing else except videos (that you can't see because you won't get whatever it is wrong fixed and you're missing out on quite a lot of cuteness, my friend!) and a poorly written recap of my weekend.

And, for once I think I knew all the things on your list, especially the part about me being beautiful! ;)

Diane said...

Meryl... yes, that sounds just like my life (minus Hunks... I could used me some Hunks ;)

Sam... works for me!!! ;)

Mel... ummm... yeah... I meant my OTHER friends.

Michelle said...

YES! I knew we had stuff in common!! I can talk to a stump too!! :O)

Great list lady!! Very honest and truthful...ok i know those words mean the same thing but somehow i had to say it.

Very lovely!!

Don't worry, you will have other moments of glory. Talent always shines through.

There's nothing wrong with thinking about sex all the time, is there?

zipbagofbones said...

Great list! Re: #5, is this book of essays something that is available for purchase?

Heather said...

I loved your list of truths. You forgot one, though. You are wonderful at saying just the right things to make someone smile, even on really awful days. Thanks for all of the support you've shown me in the short time we've known each other in the blog world. Your comment today meant so much to me. :)

Jane! said...

Wow, congrats on the book thing. That is seriously quite an achievement.
Do you really believe in potential? I think the sky's the limit.

Not gonna comment on number 3...

Diane said...

Michelle... you are here and forever known as "Stump Talker" ;)

Jim... thank you xo. And no, I don't think there is. It's not likely to change (I hope not, anyway ;)

Cat... I'm making up my sandwich board now... it's never too late, right? ;)

Heather... oh, my dear little bloggy sister, I'm glad I could cheer you up even a little bit on a sad day... xo

Jane!... I'd like to think the sky's the limit... and I do with other people... it's with me I have issues. Sigh.

Don't be afraid of alreading having reached the top of your potential meter...I don't know you well, but sense that you are some one who has MUCH more to come!

Amy McMean said...

WOW those are some honest things. I agree with you on so many. Maybe you could do my list for me. Sam tagged me and I'm drawing an honesty blank.

San Diego Momma said...

I know I'd really like you if we met in person. This was really honest, and deep.

I relate on many levels, esp. the ass level. And you do so have a beautiful face!

Lawyer Mom said...

If I were a guy I'd say you are a total MILF. Hell, I'm a girl and I'll say it. Great list. And your published essay? Wowsa. Am too intimidated to comment further. Congrats.

Kendall said...

I remember you telling me about your essay in Ms. King's book, and I've tried to find it but I haven't been able to locate a copy. Perhaps Amazon...

I share a few of these with you, I'm a huge supporter for gay marriage and I do think about sex more than a teenaged boy (smile)

Number #10 hit like a punch to the guy as I sometimes wonder the same thing.

Jenners said...

We have so much in common...probably why I love your blog so much.

I too cannot hide my feelings. I am pretty much an open book.

I find it difficult to put myself in situations to find new friends and tend to just keep one or two at a time rather than try to find new ones. But I love being "alone" so I don't worry about having so many friends. I think that is why I love blogging so much ... satisfies my need to be social without having the hassle of real life friends. (That sounds bad, I know).

Unfortunately, I dont' think about sex that often ... most of my efforts in that area are spent AVOIDING it rather than trying to have it. I can blame the Catholic Church for that.

Totally support gay marriage. My SIL is gay and I wish they could get married and get some of the benefits. Some day, some day.

So impressed about your essay! That is amazing! Is there a link to it anywhere or can you share the title of the book?

You are lucky to have had love twice ... some people never get it once. I hope you find it a third time.

I am pretty much with you on the religion thing. I believe in SOMETHING but hesitate to define it in any conventional way.

I have never been the pretty one amongst my friends either -- but I was the funny one and I think that is better in the long run.

I agree -- being a mom is the most important thing I'll ever do but it is not everything about me. I really don't want my blog to be a "mommy blog" and I hope it isn't but you can't cut that part of your life out.

Totally agree with you about the potential. I thought I had so much more when I was in my 20s but now not so sure. But I actually care less about fulfilling my potential now that I'm older. I just want to be happy and enjoy life.

You rock! And you are probably one of the most honest bloggers I know!

Diane said...

Sherri... thanks so much!!! I appreciate the vote of confidence :)

Amy... I hate those honestly blanks!

SDM... awww... thanks :). If I'm ever in San Diego, you KNOW I'm looking you up. If you're ever in Pigsknuckle... wait... never mind... you'll NEVER be in Pigsknuckle. Sigh.

ALMM... wow... I don't think anyone's ever referred to me as a MILF. I'm flattered (even though you're a girl ;)!!!

Kendall... I looked today for someone else and it is on Amazon.

Jenners... I'm totally with you on the whole 'Mommy Blog' thing. I just want a 'Diane Blog' :). And yes, the book is called 'Open My Eyes, Open My Soul', by Yolanda King and Elodia Tate. My essay (which was, in my opinion, over-edited) is called 'Loving Levi'. It's been out a few years now, so it's not a piece of cake to find. But if you find do, let me know! It's really wonderful... full of essays by people like Maya Angelou, Robert Kennedy, and normal people, like me! OK, so that's relative ;)

hebba said...

I'm wondering if you and I share a covalent brain. So often I read your blog and I see my deep held beliefs reflected back to my in your posts...

Diane said...

Hebba... that's a great thing for me, as I love the way you see the world and express what you see. For you, however... I might be a little scared ;)

J Cosmo Newbery said...

You're not normal! Thank heavens.

A good thoughtful list. It's nice to 'flesh some one out' and feel that you know them a bit better.

And, no, I will not be taking up the baton!

Lee said...

It is amazing how blogging permits us, lures us, into revealing a lot about ourselves. Not a bad thing but more than we would normally give out to someone sitting beside us on a tram. Perhaps there is a camaraderie between the blogger and his/her regular readers.

But thank you, it is lovely to know a little more about you. I may tackle it later in the week.

Stinking Billy said...

diane, all these lovely friends quite rightly praising you for your amazing honesty, but not one of them challenging you to show us your ugly ass? I'm betting that it's just gorgeous. ;-) x

Diane said...

JCosmo... 'Normal' is something of which I've never been accused ;)

Lee... it IS interesting. I think it just feels safe here, as bloggers tend to be of the most supportive sort (with rare exceptions).

Billy... YOU, sir are a huge flirt (which I love, by the way ;). Don't stop!

Andy - Instafather said...

I've added to your award total today, Diane. You reap what you sow, and you sow golden nuggets of humor.

♥ Braja said...

Yeah show us your ass...

Great nuggets from Diane's world!! You are who you make yourself, and that can be reinvented as many times as you like until your time expires. Follow your dreams, Diane. Do all those things that you want or at least fail while trying to do them.

fantastic!
really fun to read and informative.
and all the guys love #3. but more than a teenage boy? i mean diane, c'mon now. a teenage boy?! i was once one of those. you'd be hard-pressed to beat that sort of reverie.
